Licensed Practical Nurse

Licensed Practical Nurse Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) provide hands-on care for patients under the supervision of physicians and registered nurses (RNs). LPNs take a patient's temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and other vital signs; dress wounds; administer prescribed medication, and may perform some tests. Assisting patients with exercising, eating, and grooming may also be a part of an LPN's job.

Significant Points Employment of LPNs is expected to grow 14 percent between 2006 and 2016. Nursing homes will offer the most new jobs. Jobseekers in hospitals may face competition.
Specializations Some hospitals may offer various opportunities for licensed practical/vocational nurses to advance, such as, IV teams, treatment nurses, critical care settings, special procedure nurses. In some instances, at other facilities such as nursing homes, LP/VNs practice in the charge nurse supervisory roles.
Work Environment Licensed practical nurses work in hospitals, nursing homes, doctor's offices, schools, army reserve, rehabiliation centers, private homes, health departments and extended care centers. LPNs in hospitals and nursing homes work a 40-hour week, but work some nights, holidays, and weekends.
High School Prep A high school diploma or equivalent is recommended; courses in English, math and biology are helpful.
Academic Requirements To become qualified as an LPN, you must complete an accredited practical nursing program at a community college/technical institute or other approved institution. Training involves four quarters (one year) of course work plus supervised clinical instruction to prepare for the National Council Licensure Examination for Licensed Practical Nurses. Course work includes fundamental nursing skills.
