Healthcare Chaplain

Healthcare Chaplain Chaplains attend to the spiritual needs of individuals in specialized settings such as hospitals. The chaplain provides counseling as well as spiritual and moral guidance to patients and their loved ones, upon request. At times, the chaplain is asked to perform religious services on site, in accordance with the chaplain´┐Żs denomination or faith group.

Work Environment In addition to hospitals, chaplains may also be employed in mental health centers, correctional institutions, law enforcement agencies, the armed forces, as well as in business and industrial settings.
High School Prep General college preparation is recommended: three courses in math including algebra I, algebra II and geometry, or a higher level math course for which algebra II is a prerequisite; three science courses including one biological science, one physical science and one lab course; four English units and two social studies units, including one in U.S. History; and two years of a second language.
Academic Requirements A professional chaplain requires a baccalaureate and a master's degree (M.Div.) in theology, the latter from an accredited theological seminary. In addition, the chaplain will need to complete at least four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), each unit consisting of at least 400 hours of supervised ministry within an institution. Many medical centers offer a chaplaincy residency in which four units of CPE programs are accredited by these recognized educational associations: the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE); the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC); and the National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC).
