Health Services Manager Health services administrators plan, direct, coordinate, and supervise the delivery of health care. They work with state and federal agencies and with governing boards to determine policies and procedures, then ensure that these policies are carried out so that the agency or institution runs smoothly. They provide leadership to the various health care professionals and support staff of their institutions. The administrator's job includes planning and budget development, patient services administration, personnel issues and preparing reports. In larger institutions, administrators may manage individual departments or projects. Opportunities are expanding as the health care environment evolves. Entirely new positions are being created to administer critical aspects of the emerging health care system including managed care, community health, alternative delivery settings, computerization, and related technology.

Specializations
Work Environment These professionals represent many different disciplines and are employed in a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional settings. Health services administrators work in hospitals, health departments, group practices, health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and the armed forces. Other specific settings may include state and federal agencies, insurance and managed care companies, law firms, technology firms, and educational institutions. Most work long hours and may also travel to attend meetings or inspect satellite facilities.
High School Prep General college preparation is recommended: three courses in math including algebra I, algebra II and geometry, or a higher level math course for which algebra II is a prerequisite; three science courses including one biological science, one physical science and one lab course; four English units and two social studies units, including one in U.S. History; and two years of a second language.
Academic Requirements A minimum of a baccalaureate degree is required, preferably in business, health policy and administration or a related field. Most employers require a graduate degree in health care, hospital or business administration. Studies cover financial management, policy development, administrative and business principles. Some health services administrators are also health care practitioners such as physicians, nurses or others who have received additional training or experience. A master's degree will be a preferred educational preparation to take full advantage of emerging opportunities and roles.
